Salako Champions Innovative 3D Prosthetics Technology

Dr. Iziq Adekunle Salako, the Honourable Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, addressed the audience at the 3D-Printed Prosthetics Technology Showcase held at the MRTB National Secretariat in Abuja on October 8, 2026.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Salako highlighted the critical importance of this innovation, emphasizing that it is not just about manufacturing prosthetic devices but about improving the lives of individuals who rely on these technologies for rehabilitation and independence.

This event marks a significant milestone in the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) project aimed at transferring Japanese 3D-printed prosthetics technology to support landmine victims in Africa. Funded by the Government of Japan, the initiative underscores the power of international collaboration and investment in local capacity.

The project, introduced in 2024, aims to modernize prosthetics services and enhance rehabilitation outcomes within Nigeria's healthcare system. The comprehensive equipment package includes advanced 3D printers, scanners, testing devices, and specialized printing consumables, all designed to improve the quality and accessibility of prosthetic devices.

Dr. Salako expressed gratitude to the Government of Japan for their generous support, as well as to UNIDO and Instalimb Japan for their expertise and contributions to this transformative initiative.

He acknowledged the challenges faced by individuals needing prosthetics, such as cost, availability, and access to skilled professionals. The showcased technology aims to address those barriers through Artificial Intelligence-driven processes and digital workflows, facilitating more efficient design and production.

While emphasizing the technology's potential, he reminded attendees that successful prosthetic care requires a comprehensive approach, including professional assessment, patient education, and ongoing support.

Dr. Salako also pointed out that this technology is meant to complement existing solutions in Nigeria, building on the expertise of local professionals while expanding service options.

He stressed the importance of capacity building and institutional strengthening, urging participating institutions to develop robust management plans for equipment and staff training to ensure the sustainability of the initiative.

As he concluded his address, he called for collaboration among all stakeholders to create a stronger prosthetics ecosystem in Nigeria, one that combines healthcare, education, and innovation.

The minister highlighted the Federal Government's commitment to establishing a state-of-the-art training center for 3D technology, reflecting their dedication to continuous improvement in rehabilitation services.

Dr. Salako encouraged all present to use the showcase as a platform for knowledge sharing and to explore how this technology can be responsibly expanded to benefit more Nigerians in need of rehabilitation and assistive technology.

With that, he formally declared the 3D-Printed Prosthetics Technology Showcase open, marking a new chapter in Nigeria’s commitment to improving access to essential healthcare technologies.
