During an inspection of the ongoing construction for the Air Defence Unit, Governor Oborevwori emphasized the strategic importance of the unit, which will be part of the newly created 83 Division, covering Delta, Edo, and Bayelsa states.
“This unit will significantly enhance our capacity to respond to security threats across these states,” he stated, highlighting Delta’s proximity to the airport as a key reason for establishing the unit there.
The state government has provided land for a temporary facility while arrangements are made for a permanent site. The governor noted that between 300 and 400 military personnel are expected to arrive in the coming weeks.
Oborevwori stressed the necessity of supporting security agencies, asserting, “Without security, there cannot be development.” He also pointed out that the improved security situation in Delta has led to a decline in armed robbery, kidnapping, and other violent crimes.
The establishment of the Air Defence Unit will play a crucial role in securing oil and gas infrastructure, as well as other vital national assets within Delta State.
“The primary goal is to safeguard our national assets and the safety of our citizens,” he added, warning that without a strong military presence, security challenges could escalate.
To ensure the success of the new unit, the governor has instructed the Commissioners for Housing and Lands to assess the temporary site and existing structures needing attention.
Accompanied by Major General Thompson Ugiagbe, Chief of Standards and Evaluation of the Nigerian Army, and Brigadier General Ibrahim Buhari, Commander of the 63 Brigade, Oborevwori reiterated that security remains a top priority for his administration.
He also recalled positive feedback from residents in areas like the Trans-Forcados pipeline, who have expressed satisfaction with the enhanced security measures in place.
The governor concluded by urging the military and local security agencies to maintain collaboration with the state government and other stakeholders to continue protecting lives, property, and critical national assets.
