Speaking at the party's national secretariat on Friday, Yilwatda welcomed defectors from opposition parties across several states, sharing his insights into the dynamics of political loyalty. "People that he has supported over the years pulled out their support when he declared his candidacy," he stated.
Yilwatda praised Tinubu's electoral success, asserting that Nigerians recognized his contributions to the nation’s unity and democracy. "Those who voted for him in 2023 did so because they appreciate his sacrifices," he emphasized.
He recounted Tinubu's history of backing Northern politicians, including his support for Atiku Abubakar in 2007, which he framed as a commitment to national unity. "If anyone has worked for Nigeria's unity, it is President Tinubu," Yilwatda insisted.
Highlighting Tinubu's backing of former President Buhari in 2015, he noted the importance of regional cooperation during times of political transition, asserting that Tinubu continuously championed Northern interests.
Yilwatda also addressed criticisms of Tinubu's infrastructure development in the North, pointing out significant projects such as the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano road and rail links that were aimed at fostering economic growth.
In response to opposition claims about Tinubu's governance, he dismissed criticism regarding the blocking of ports and challenged the feasibility of promises made by rival parties regarding fuel pricing.
He accused the opposition of lacking insight into the realities of governance, particularly regarding claims that Tinubu had failed to deliver for the North. "They deceive you with false narratives," he stated.
The APC chairman went further to criticize former Vice President Atiku for privatizing public assets at a fraction of their worth, calling for accountability from opposition leaders. "How can you sell a company built for billions for mere millions?" he questioned.
As part of the event, Yilwatda welcomed new members into the APC, emphasizing that their defections were a testament to confidence in Tinubu's leadership and the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Dr. Princess Aslam Aliyu, a party member, noted that in recent weeks, multiple candidates from opposition parties have joined the APC, showcasing a shift in political allegiance.
Sen. Ajibola Basiru, the APC National Secretary, reinforced the party's commitment to a multi-party system, rejecting assertions that the APC seeks to establish a one-party state.
Defending recent government initiatives, Basiru addressed concerns about the student loan scheme, asserting its benefits for over 1.4 million students, while also affirming that the era of fuel subsidies is over.
As the APC solidifies its ranks, the party appears poised to leverage its historical alliances and infrastructure projects in the lead-up to the next election.
