From Heartbreak to Hope: Banky W Finds Purpose in Pastoral Ministry After Election Loss

Nigerian singer and filmmaker Bankole Wellington, known as Banky W, has revealed that his defeat in the 2023 House of Representatives election led him to embrace a new calling as a pastor.

 Reflecting on his journey during his first anniversary as a pastor in the United States, Banky W shared how the electoral setback prompted him to reassess his life and aspirations.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, he admitted, "In 2023, I lost an election, and while the experience inspired me in many ways, it also broke my heart into a million little pieces." This loss pushed him to seek guidance from God, ultimately leading him to surrender his ambitions and seek a greater purpose.

After the election, Banky W found himself questioning whether he should dedicate his life to leadership, entertainment, business, or ministry. However, he eventually realized that he didn't have to choose one path over another. “It wasn’t either/or. It was all of the above,” he explained.

He emphasized that his transition into pastoral ministry has broadened his understanding of purpose. "God wasn’t trying to put me in a box. He was expanding my assignment," he remarked, underscoring that his responsibilities now encompass multiple roles.

Banky W humorously recalled his past jokes about the meaning of the letter "P" in his name, saying, “I used to joke that it stood for Professor, not Pastor. I guess God heard and said, ‘Why not both?’”

He now juggles his duties as a pastor and professor alongside his careers in filmmaking and music. Despite the challenges of traveling frequently between Lagos and the Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia area, he insists that the journey has been worthwhile.

Reflecting on the past year, Banky W noted that setbacks can lead to unexpected opportunities. "One year later, I’m reminded that sometimes what feels like the end of your story is really just God turning the page," he said.

Although he lost the 2023 election for the Eti-Osa Federal Constituency in Lagos State to Thaddeus Attah of the Labour Party, he remains optimistic about his future. "The election didn’t go the way I hoped. But God’s plans for my life are bigger than the plans I had for myself," he concluded.

Banky W's journey serves as an inspiring reminder that even in defeat, new paths can emerge, leading to meaningful and fulfilling lives.
