NAF Chief Promises Support for Families Following Fatal Aircraft Crash

Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, Chief of the Air Staff, has announced a comprehensive investigation into the tragic crash of a Nigerian Air Force aircraft in Igbokoda, Ondo State, which resulted in the loss of 25 lives.

During a visit to the crash site, Aneke assured the families of the deceased that the Nigerian Armed Forces would provide the necessary support during this difficult time.

The aircraft, identified by tail number NGR 931, was on a routine flight from Benin to Lagos when it crashed into a swampy area near the Naval Forward Operating Base in Igbokoda, claiming all 25 lives on board, including crew members.

Recovery efforts have faced challenges due to the difficult terrain, with the main body of the aircraft and the remains of the victims still largely unrecovered nearly 96 hours after the accident. The flight recorder, or black box, which could shed light on the crash's circumstances, has also not been located.

Heavy-duty amphibious equipment, provided by the Ondo State Government, has been deployed to assist in the recovery operations, but initial attempts using smaller boats proved inadequate.

Aneke stated he has directed a high-level team of military and civilian safety experts to investigate the crash, emphasizing the need for a thorough examination to understand what transpired.

“I urge the public to refrain from speculation as we work to uncover the facts surrounding this tragedy,” he said, expressing the importance of patience during the investigative process.

He acknowledged the profound loss felt by the families, stating, “No words can truly convey the sorrow we share with those who have lost loved ones.”

Aneke also commended the local response to the disaster, thanking the Ondo State Government and residents of Igbokoda for their efforts in aiding the recovery.

“I want to express my deep sorrow and condolence to the families affected by this tragic incident,” he added, revealing that he personally knew many of the victims.

The Air Chief vowed that the Nigerian Armed Forces would stand by the bereaved families, ensuring their needs are met during this challenging time.

As the investigation unfolds, the Air Force remains committed to aviation safety, leaving no stone unturned to determine the cause of the accident and prevent future occurrences.
