This announcement was made by the Honourable Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, as part of ongoing efforts to uphold educational standards and ensure safe, compliant environments for learners.
Mr. Alli-Balogun emphasized the administration's commitment to sanitizing the education sector, stating that the proliferation of unapproved schools operating outside regulatory frameworks will no longer be tolerated.
He noted that OEQA had organized two comprehensive training programs in 2026 aimed at demystifying the approval process for private schools. These sessions provided practical guidance to school proprietors, making it easier for them to navigate the registration requirements.
“We have simplified the process and provided all necessary support. The government has engaged and trained over 800 unapproved schools this year alone. What remains is for proprietors to show compliance and a willingness to align with regulations,” he explained.
The Commissioner reassured school owners that the approval process is not punitive but essential for the safety of children and the credibility of educational institutions.
He urged all affected schools to seize this opportunity to regularize their status without delay, highlighting the importance of collaboration between private school owners and the state government in delivering quality education.
During a meeting at the OEQA Conference Room in Ikeja, Dr. Sulaimon Ogunmuyiwa, the Director-General of OEQA, reiterated that registration is mandatory for all private schools as per Lagos State Education Law.
Dr. Ogunmuyiwa highlighted the rapid increase in private schools in the state, stressing that proper registration and documentation are vital for effective monitoring and quality assurance.
He informed school proprietors that applications for registration can be submitted at the OEQA Office located in Alausa, Ikeja. The registration process is straightforward, with agency officers available to assist with guidance.
The registration offers numerous benefits, including official recognition by the state government, eligibility for state and private-sector initiatives, access to technical support, and timely updates on educational policies and opportunities.
Dr. Ogunmuyiwa assured that under Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu's leadership, the state government remains dedicated to providing every child with access to safe and quality education, viewing the registration of private schools as crucial to achieving the objectives of the THEMES Plus Development Agenda.
