At a recent Quarterly Collaborative Learning Session held at the Iba Local Government Secretariat, Dr. Oladapo Asiyanbi, Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Health District V, emphasized the need for continuous quality improvement and effective monitoring during labor. These enhancements come as part of a broader initiative to strengthen the referral systems within the healthcare network.
Dr. Asiyanbi praised health workers for their commitment to improving maternal health services, urging them to take ownership of their roles and actively promote the available services within their communities. He highlighted the importance of ensuring that residents are well-informed about the maternal health services at their disposal.
A key focus of the meeting was establishing stronger connections between Primary and Secondary Healthcare facilities. Dr. Asiyanbi underscored that effective referral mechanisms, proper documentation, timely feedback, and continuity of care are vital for improving maternal health outcomes.
Dr. Ahmad Amina Bello, Director of Medical Services and Disease Control, echoed these sentiments, stressing the importance of adhering to established clinical protocols. She pointed out that sustained quality improvement relies on teamwork and the unwavering commitment of healthcare providers to deliver safe and responsive services to mothers and newborns.
Dr. Oladeinde Oluwaseun, Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, stressed the necessity of data-driven decision-making in healthcare delivery. He noted that accurate data from PHC facilities is essential for identifying service gaps and developing targeted interventions to enhance maternal health outcomes.
The meeting also served as a platform for participating facilities to review their progress in antenatal care and delivery services, share best practices, and devise strategies to sustain the improvements achieved through Project Aisha.
Notably, the ANC4 return rate saw a remarkable increase from 37% to 56% in just three months, indicating the positive impact of the quality improvement initiatives undertaken at the participating PHCs.
The discussions reaffirmed the commitment of Lagos State Health District V to building upon the successes of Project Aisha and integrating continuous quality improvement practices into routine healthcare delivery.
This initiative aligns with the Health and Environment pillar of the T.H.E.M.E.S+ Development Agenda under Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s administration. The state government remains dedicated to strengthening the healthcare system and ensuring access to quality, patient-centered services for all residents.
As the Lagos State Government continues to prioritize maternal health, these efforts signify a promising step towards better health outcomes for mothers and newborns in the region.
