Sowore Calls for NYSC Overhaul After Corps Members Abduction

Omoyele Sowore, the African Action Congress presidential candidate, is demanding the immediate suspension and eventual abolition of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme following the alarming abduction of prospective corps members in Imo State.

In a post on X, Sowore highlighted the grave risks associated with forcing graduates to travel across the country for national service, especially after gunmen attacked two buses on the Owerri-Onitsha Road, taking young Nigerians en route to orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states.

The Imo State Police Command reported ongoing efforts to rescue the victims, with some already freed.

However, the incident has intensified discussions about the safety of corps members during their mandatory service.

Sowore stated that the NYSC has "outlived its usefulness," reiterating his stance from previous presidential campaigns.

He emphasized, “You cannot compel young Nigerians to serve their fatherland when the country cannot guarantee their safety.”

He proposed that all corps members be allowed to serve within their states of origin to mitigate risk. “Young Nigerians need jobs, opportunities, skills, and security, not compulsory deployment into danger,” he argued.

In place of the NYSC, Sowore suggested a two-year voluntary National Job Corps focused on employment, skills development, and national projects in healthcare, education, and technology.

His comments come at a time when security agencies are ramping up efforts to locate the remaining abducted individuals, with the Inspector-General of Police deploying a specialized team for the search-and-rescue operation.

The abductors have reportedly demanded a ransom of N50 million for each of the 19 victims, totaling a staggering N950 million, raising further concerns about the safety of those traveling for the NYSC.

With insecurity on the rise, Sowore’s call for reform resonates with many who question the viability and safety of the current national service scheme. As public discussions unfold, the fate of the NYSC hangs in the balance amid growing calls for change.
