Imo Police Locate NYSC Kidnappers’ Hideout, Rescue Efforts Hampered by IEDs

The Imo State Police Command has successfully identified the hideout of suspected kidnappers holding abducted National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, but rescue efforts are complicated by the presence of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in the area.

Commissioner of Police Audu Garba Bosso reported that security operatives utilized drones to pinpoint the location of the abductors, who are believed to be hiding in a remote bush area. However, the operation has been delayed due to intelligence indicating that the camp is heavily mined.

“We trailed them to a specific location, but we couldn’t advance due to the IEDs,” Bosso explained during a press briefing.

He emphasized that security forces are preparing to deploy heavy equipment, including high-velocity vehicles, bulldozers, and armored personnel carriers, to safely access the area and rescue the victims.

The victims were among those abducted on October 1, when gunmen attacked two buses traveling along the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway. These buses were carrying prospective corps members on their way to orientation camps in the South East and South South regions.

According to the police, 10 victims were initially rescued at the scene, while the total number of those still in captivity is under verification. The Defence Headquarters stated that 20 passengers were abducted, including several corps members, and that a joint search and rescue operation is ongoing.

Bosso reassured the public that efforts to locate and rescue the remaining victims are in full swing, despite the challenges posed by the dangerous conditions at the kidnappers’ hideout.

As the situation unfolds, the community remains hopeful for the safe return of the abducted corps members while authorities intensify their efforts to neutralize the threat posed by the kidnappers.
