Edo Governor Threatens Contractor with Arrest Over Abandoned Benin-Abraka Road

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has issued a stern warning to the contractor responsible for a section of the Benin-Abraka Road, threatening arrest due to the project's abandonment despite receiving payment from the previous administration.

During a tour to rally support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Orhionmwon and Uhunmwode local government areas, Okpebholo expressed frustration over the road's condition, which connects Edo and Delta states.

In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Patrick Ebojele, the governor revealed that the road was awarded to two contractors, with one making significant progress—about 75% complete—while the other has failed to deliver.

“Despite being paid by the previous administration, the contractor has abandoned the road, causing motorists significant hardship,” Okpebholo stated, highlighting the detrimental impact on local commuters.

He indicated that his decision to publicly address the issue stemmed from numerous complaints received during his visit. “I never wanted to speak on this, but the situation has compelled me to take action,” he said.

Accompanied by APC leaders and senior government officials, Okpebholo's visit also aimed to mobilize support ahead of the 2027 general elections. He reiterated the importance of addressing infrastructure issues for the welfare of the residents.

Edo APC Chairman Jarrett Tenebe praised party members for their turnout and urged continued support for the governor and the party as they prepare for upcoming elections.

As the governor’s warning looms, the future of the Benin-Abraka Road project remains uncertain, and residents continue to suffer the consequences of the contractor's negligence.

Okpebholo’s administration appears committed to tackling the infrastructure crisis, with the potential for legal action against the negligent contractor serving as a crucial step in restoring public trust.
