Tragedy on the River: Boat Capsizes with Over 70 Mourners in Benue

In a heartbreaking incident on Saturday morning, a wooden boat carrying more than 70 mourners capsized while crossing the River Katsina-Ala in Benue State, leaving several passengers unaccounted for.

The tragedy struck around 11 am at the Buruku Local Government Area crossing point as mourners returned from a relative's burial. Eyewitnesses reported that the boat was heavily overloaded, with more than 30 motorcycles aboard, when the engine failed, triggering panic among those on board.

“The boat was packed with people and motorcycles,” said one eyewitness. “When the engine failed, panic ensued, and the boat capsized before help could arrive.”

The Chairman of Buruku LGA, Mr. Raymond Zege, confirmed that many passengers had been rescued, but the exact number of missing individuals remains uncertain. “So far, we have not seen about six persons, but we have rescued over 60,” he stated, emphasizing that search and rescue operations were ongoing.

Zege urged the community to adhere to maritime safety regulations, including the mandatory use of life jackets, which are often resisted by passengers. “We have provided life jackets, but many refuse to use them, citing various concerns,” he noted.

Benue State Commissioner for Marine and Blue Economy, Hon. Denis Iyaghigba, also addressed the incident, calling for calm among families of those involved. “I have received preliminary reports and assure the public that no effort will be spared to ensure the safety of all individuals,” he said.

He has instructed local boat operators and their union to mobilize support for the ongoing rescue efforts. “Further details will be communicated as the operation progresses,” Iyaghigba added.

As the search continues, authorities are working diligently to determine the total number of passengers aboard and those still missing. The incident highlights the urgent need for improved safety measures on waterways to prevent future tragedies.

With emotions running high, families await news of their loved ones, hoping for a swift and safe resolution to this tragic event.
