The arrest took place around 3:50 PM on Saturday when vigilant correctional officers intercepted Balikis as she tried to bring the prohibited substance into the facility for an inmate.
According to Olayinka Odukoya, the Public Relations Officer for the Ogun State Command, the ethanol was cleverly concealed in a bottled-water pack, disguising it as regular drinking water. The substance was detected during routine screening, preventing it from reaching the intended recipient.
Following her arrest, Balikis was turned over to the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation and potential prosecution. This swift action by the correctional officers underscores their commitment to maintaining security within the facility.
Controller of Corrections, Ogun State Command, Abioye Adesina, praised the officers for their vigilance, calling the incident a testament to the command's zero-tolerance policy against contraband smuggling. He reiterated the commitment to uphold safety and discipline in custodial facilities.
Adesina assured the public that the command would enhance screening processes and security measures to thwart any attempts at smuggling contraband into the facilities. This incident comes just weeks after another woman, Iyabo Sowunmi, was apprehended for trying to smuggle illicit drugs into the same facility, allegedly intended for her son on death row.
The ongoing efforts by the Nigerian Correctional Service to prevent contraband infiltration reflect a broader strategy to maintain order and uphold the rule of law within Nigeria's correctional system.
As these incidents unfold, the command remains focused on ensuring the safety of inmates and the integrity of the custodial environment.
