Omoyele Sowore, the African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, has sparked a political firestorm by alleging that President Bola Tinubu is receiving medical treatment in France, countering the official narrative that he is on a working vacation.
During an interview on Arise TV's Prime Time on Monday, Sowore discussed the President's extended absence from Nigeria, particularly his notable absence from the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York. He asserted that his claims were based on information from "reliable sources," although he admitted he was unaware of the specific nature of Tinubu's alleged ailment.
“I’ve been monitoring developments around the UN General Assembly, and some sources have informed me that Tinubu is undergoing treatment,” Sowore stated. He hinted at undisclosed information regarding the situation but did not elaborate further.
Sowore criticized the President's sporadic public appearances, suggesting they were staged to give the impression that Tinubu was fulfilling his presidential duties. “Those occasional appearances are designed to fool the public,” he claimed.
This controversy arises as Tinubu has been in Europe since August 30, initially described by the Presidency as a three-week vacation, which has since been extended. The official stance maintains that the President is "hale and hearty" and actively engaging with international investors while abroad.
Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, reiterated that the President would return to Nigeria soon, dismissing any health concerns as unfounded. Meanwhile, Vice President Kashim Shettima represented Nigeria at the UN General Assembly in Tinubu's absence.
Critics are increasingly questioning the transparency surrounding the President's health and the motivations behind the government's communications. As speculation grows, the public remains watchful for further updates on Tinubu’s condition and his return to Nigeria.
