NDLEA and Army Crush Cannabis Farms in Edo, Arrest Two Suspects

In a decisive operation, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and military personnel have successfully dismantled two cannabis plantations in Edo State, covering 0.544 hectares and yielding an estimated 1,360.23 kg of the illicit substance.

The operation, conducted on September 23, 2026, also resulted in the destruction of 107 kg of processed cannabis, including seeds, in Eko Camp, Illushi, located in the Esan South-East Local Government Area.

Edo NDLEA Commander, Mitchell Ofoyeju, reported the arrest of two suspects, Ajeh Egwuda, 43, and Nonso Ajodhe, who both reside in the Esan South-East area. The suspects indicated that poverty and peer pressure led them to engage in cannabis cultivation.

Ajeh was caught managing a smaller plot of 0.068 hectares, yielding approximately 170.03 kg of cannabis, while Nonso operated a larger area of 0.476 hectares with an estimated yield of 1,190.20 kg.

“This operation underscores our relentless commitment to combating drug abuse and trafficking in Edo State,” Ofoyeju stated, warning those who exploit local lands for illegal activities. He emphasized that the NDLEA will not rest until cannabis cultivation is eradicated from their communities.

The commander highlighted the importance of collaboration, stating, “We will combine intelligence-driven surveillance, community engagement, and decisive enforcement in this campaign.” He expressed gratitude for the support from Brig. Gen. Ahmed Balogun, Commanding Officer of the Nigeria Army 4 Brigade.

Ofoyeju reassured the public of the NDLEA’s dedication to addressing drug-related issues, saying, “This operation reflects our unwavering determination to protect our communities from the harms of drug abuse and trafficking.”

He also called on residents to provide timely information that could lead to further arrests within cannabis networks, emphasizing community involvement as crucial to their efforts.

The NDLEA’s proactive stance aims to dismantle drug networks and mitigate the negative impact of illegal substances on society, reinforcing their mission to create safer communities across Edo State.
