Okonkwo expressed skepticism about Peter Obi's chances of winning as the candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), emphasizing that he cannot succeed without broader support. He stated that even with former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso as a running mate, Obi would struggle to make a significant impact.
“Coalition is the only way out,” Okonkwo asserted. He underscored the importance of unity among opposition parties, arguing that Tinubu's political strategy is aggressive and requires a concerted effort to counter.
“Tinubu has made it clear that power isn’t just handed over; it must be fought for,” he added, highlighting the need for a strategic approach to the election.
Okonkwo further pointed out that Obi would face considerable challenges in securing votes from northern Nigeria, a key demographic in the election. “If Peter Obi goes against Tinubu alone, Tinubu will eat him like biscuits,” he remarked, referencing Obi's previous struggles in the region during the 2023 elections.
He dismissed Kwankwaso's potential contributions to the ticket, stating that even in his home state of Kano, Kwankwaso’s political influence has waned. “Kwankwaso has nothing to contribute to the ticket. He has lost ground in Kano,” Okonkwo asserted.
As discussions around coalition-building intensify, the stakes for the 2027 elections continue to rise, with opposition figures recognizing the need for unity to challenge Tinubu effectively.
