Suspected Cultist Dies While Fleeing Police Arrest in Ogun State

A suspected cultist, identified as Damola, tragically slumped and died while attempting to evade police arrest in the Kajola area of Ikenne Local Government, Ogun State. The incident occurred last Sunday as he and other alleged cult members ambushed a man who had previously reported threats to his life to the authorities.

According to counterinsurgency expert Zagazola Makama, police had acted swiftly on intelligence that the victim was in danger, leading them to the ambush site. Upon arriving, police operatives arrested one suspect, Oluwatimileyin Daniel, while others, including Damola, fled the scene.

While trying to escape, Damola reportedly collapsed and was rushed to a hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his condition. This incident has raised tensions within the community, prompting security agencies to bolster their presence in the area to maintain order.

Opeyemi Oluborode, the Deputy Public Relations Officer for the Ogun State Police Command, confirmed the unfolding events, stating that a thorough investigation is underway to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The community has expressed concern over the growing influence of cult activities, as this is not an isolated case. Earlier in July, the Lagos State Police Command apprehended five suspected cultists involved in terrorizing the Apapa, Ijora, and Badia areas, recovering weapons and suspected narcotics in the process.

Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities as they work to combat the surge of cult-related violence in the region. The recent events underscore the urgent need for effective law enforcement and community cooperation to tackle the menace of cultism in Nigeria.

As the investigation continues, the Ogun State Police are committed to ensuring justice and restoring peace to the affected areas, emphasizing that they will not tolerate any form of criminal activity.
