New British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Pete Vowles, Arrives in Abuja

The new British High Commissioner-designate to Nigeria, Pete Vowles, has officially arrived in Abuja to begin his diplomatic mission, succeeding Richard Montgomery.

In a statement released by Atinuke Akande-Alegbe, Senior Communications and Public Diplomacy Officer at the British High Commission, Vowles expressed his enthusiasm for his new role. “I am hugely excited to be in Nigeria. My first priority is to listen and learn – to travel, meet people, and immerse myself in this extraordinary country,” he stated.

Highlighting the strong ties between the UK and Nigeria, Vowles emphasized the importance of people-to-people connections that underpin the bilateral relationship. “The UK and Nigeria have a deep and enduring partnership. I’m looking forward to discovering Nigeria for myself and working with partners across the country,” he added.

Vowles brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having previously served as His Majesty’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe and holding senior positions within the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. His diplomatic journey includes postings in Myanmar, Bangladesh, India, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Kenya.

His arrival is timely as Nigeria and the UK continue to strengthen their diplomatic, economic, and security ties, bolstered by a significant Nigerian diaspora in Britain.

As he embarks on his assignment, Vowles aims to deepen the existing partnership and explore new opportunities for collaboration.

The announcement of his appointment was made on June 16, 2026, marking a significant transition in British diplomatic relations in Nigeria.

Vowles’ commitment to engaging directly with the Nigerian people reflects a modern approach to diplomacy, prioritizing on-the-ground understanding and collaboration.

The British High Commission looks forward to Vowles’ leadership as both nations navigate shared challenges and opportunities ahead.

As Nigeria welcomes its new High Commissioner, the global community watches closely, anticipating the next chapter in UK-Nigeria relations.
