On Friday, enforcement teams descended upon Benin, specifically targeting areas like Mission Road and New Benin Market, where they seized a substantial quantity of the prohibited products.
Mr. Ugwu Agu, Deputy Director of Investigation and Enforcement for the South-South/South-East Zone, led the operation. He emphasized that the action was based on credible intelligence regarding the sale of such items in the region.
Representing Dr. Martins Iluyomade, the Director of Investigation and Enforcement, Agu stated, “We had credible intelligence that these alcohol products are in this place. So we came here, we saw it, and we are mopping it up.”
The initiative aims to send a clear message that the sale of sachet alcohol is no longer permissible under existing regulations. Agu highlighted the harmful impact these products have on youths and children, who can easily purchase and conceal them due to their small sizes.
He reiterated that restricting access to alcohol for individuals under 18 aligns with international resolutions endorsed by NAFDAC and the World Health Assembly. “Wherever we see it in any market, we will mop it up and take it away from circulation,” he asserted.
The agency's crackdown reflects its commitment to public health and safety, ensuring that vulnerable populations are protected from the dangers of easily accessible alcohol.
As NAFDAC continues its enforcement operations, residents are urged to comply with regulations and report any illegal sales. The agency is determined to keep communities safe by removing harmful products from the market.
