Lamine Yamal: "I've Faced Racism a Thousand Times"

Barcelona star Lamine Yamal has opened up about his experiences with racism, stating he has encountered it “a thousand times” throughout his career. In a candid interview with former Argentina international Jorge Valdano on Spanish broadcaster Movistar, the 19-year-old forward shed light on the often subtle ways racism manifests in society.

Yamal emphasized that many individuals may not recognize their own prejudices, saying, “People are indirectly racist towards you, but maybe don’t realize it.” His remarks come in the wake of a series of incidents during his rapid ascent in football, including a notable episode of racial abuse during the El Clásico against Real Madrid in October 2024.

The young athlete clarified that he distinguishes between casual references to his race and those intended to offend. “If someone calls me Black, it’s not going to bother me at all,” Yamal explained. “Ultimately, I’m Black, I’m not any other color.” 

He noted that the real issue lies in the intent behind such comments. “Another thing is whether it’s good or bad, whether they’re saying it to offend me,” he added. 

Yamal shared that he tries not to let the negativity from fans distract him during matches. “If I’m playing a match and they paid for a ticket to see me, I’m not going to get angry just because they disrespected me,” he stated.

According to the Spanish Observatory on Racism and Xenophobia, both Yamal and Real Madrid’s Vinícius Jr. were among the most targeted players for online racist abuse in Spain during the final months of 2025. 

The agency also reported that racist and Islamophobic content aimed at Yamal was detected during the 2026 World Cup, highlighting the ongoing struggle against racism in sports.
