Rhodes-Vivour: "I've Learned Yoruba and Will Campaign in the Language"

Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has announced his commitment to learning Yoruba as he prepares for the upcoming elections in Lagos State. Speaking during an interview on Arise TV, he expressed his belief that understanding the language is crucial for effective communication with the electorate.

Rhodes-Vivour shared that he has engaged a Yoruba teacher to enhance his fluency, allowing him to campaign more authentically within the diverse communities of Lagos. "Culture and language are very important," he emphasized, showcasing his determination to connect with residents on a deeper level.

During the interview, Rhodes-Vivour demonstrated his progress by responding in Yoruba when greeted by one of the presenters. His ability to engage in the language marks a significant step forward, especially following scrutiny over his language skills during the 2023 governorship race.

The candidate reflected on the challenges facing Lagos, including flooding, traffic congestion, and a housing crisis, noting that these issues affect all residents regardless of their ethnic backgrounds. His focus remains on creating an inclusive environment where all Lagosians can thrive.

Rhodes-Vivour's mixed heritage—his father is Yoruba and his mother is Igbo—has sparked discussions about his connection to the Yoruba culture. In the past, he faced criticism for his limited fluency, where he candidly admitted he did not "think in Yoruba." However, he is now taking proactive steps to bridge that gap.

His commitment to learning the language has garnered support from various groups, including Afenifere and Eko Forum, who have defended his candidacy against detractors questioning his belonging to Lagos due to his maternal roots. 

As he seeks the ADC ticket for the 2027 election, Rhodes-Vivour aims to present himself as a candidate who genuinely understands and represents the diverse voices of Lagos. His supporters believe that greater fluency in Yoruba will enhance his relatability and appeal among voters.
