The by-election, scheduled for Saturday, September 19, 2026, is set to engage 495,851 registered voters across three local government areas. INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner for Gombe State, Alhaji Umar Muktar Gajiram, confirmed that the materials have been dispatched to the respective local governments for further deployment to polling units.
During the distribution, representatives from political parties, security agencies, and members of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security were present to ensure transparency throughout the process. Gajiram emphasized the importance of conducting the exercise in a public and open manner, which bolsters confidence in the electoral system.
To authenticate the materials, Gajiram noted that endorsements and signatures were affixed to ensure that only certified items are used in the election. This measure is part of INEC’s commitment to upholding electoral integrity and transparency.
The Commissioner called on political parties, candidates, and their supporters to adhere to the Peace Accord they signed prior to the election. “We expect everyone to maintain peace and ensure that the election is conducted in an orderly, peaceful, and credible manner,” he stated.
Gajiram highlighted that the responsibility for a peaceful election is a collective obligation among all stakeholders, urging everyone involved to honor their commitments under the Peace Accord.
This by-election comes following a vacancy in the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency, and all eyes are now on the polling units as Gombe prepares for a vital democratic exercise.
As the date approaches, INEC remains focused on ensuring a smooth electoral process, reinforcing the need for cooperation from all parties involved to achieve a successful outcome.
