Nasarawa State Bans Child Mining, Launches Task Force Against Illegal Activities

The Nasarawa State Government has enacted a strict ban on individuals under the age of 18 participating in mining activities across all 13 local government areas. This decision comes alongside the establishment of a special monitoring and enforcement team aimed at addressing illegal mining and child labor issues in the region.

Commissioner for Environment, Solid Minerals, and Mining, Margaret Elayo, announced the ban during a press conference in Lafia. She emphasized that the measure was prompted by recent incidents of suspected illegal miners dying in neighboring Niger State, highlighting the dangers associated with mining for young individuals.

Elayo stated, “We cannot stand by and watch as young residents engage in activities that endanger their lives and harm the environment.” The newly formed monitoring team will be tasked with visiting mining sites to ensure compliance and arrest those operating without proper licenses.

The commissioner expressed grave concerns regarding the use of minors in artisanal mining, particularly in areas like Wamba, Nasarawa-Eggon, and Kokona. “No child below 18 is allowed at any mining site in Nasarawa State, whether as a laborer, errand runner, or food vendor,” she declared.

Violators of this directive—be they companies or individuals—will face arrest and prosecution under the Child Rights Law and mining regulations. Elayo urged mining operators to employ adults, provide necessary training, and ensure safety equipment is available for their workers.

The state government aims to collaborate with security agencies, traditional rulers, and community leaders to enforce the ban effectively. Elayo also mentioned that the government is working with the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development to formalize artisanal miners into cooperatives, promoting better regulation and safety standards.

This initiative is not intended to halt mining activities but to ensure that they are conducted responsibly and sustainably. Nasarawa State is rich in solid minerals like lithium, tin, and gold, which have drawn numerous artisanal miners to the area.

The announcement follows a tragic event where 37 suspected illegal miners died while in custody in Niger State, underscoring the urgent need for regulatory measures in mining practices.

Elayo’s commitment to safeguarding children’s rights and protecting the environment reflects a growing awareness of the dangers posed by unregulated mining activities. As the state enforces this ban, it hopes to create a safer and more sustainable mining landscape for all residents.
