Bayelsa State Boosts Primary Healthcare with Deployment of 19 Doctors and 210 Nurses

The Bayelsa State Government announced a significant enhancement to its primary healthcare system by deploying 19 doctors, 210 nurses and midwives, 185 pharmacy technicians, and about 50 laboratory medical technicians to healthcare centers across the state.

Health Commissioner Prof. Seiyefa Brisibe made the announcement during a training event organized by the Health Emergency Initiative, supported by FIRST E&P. He emphasized that this initiative aims to strengthen clinical services, particularly in rural areas where residents typically seek initial medical attention.

"Our primary healthcare centers need to be more robust," Brisibe stated. "Community health workers play a vital role, but having qualified medical personnel will ensure better care for our residents."

The deployment strategy includes assigning more doctors to areas with challenging terrain and higher populations, ensuring equitable healthcare access across the state's 18 local government areas.

Brisibe highlighted that regular consultations by medical professionals would encourage more residents, especially women, to seek professional care during childbirth. "If people know that doctors are available regularly, they will come for consultations," he noted.

The recruitment process is nearing completion, and the new healthcare personnel are expected to begin their duties within the month. The initiative aims to make primary healthcare more appealing and accessible, ultimately leading to better health outcomes for Bayelsans.

Emmanuel Etomi, Executive Director of Corporate Services at FIRST E&P, underscored the importance of timely emergency responses, stating that quick action during medical emergencies can be lifesaving. He stressed the need to equip communities with emergency response knowledge, particularly for young people.

Etomi also mentioned the Health Emergency Initiative's ongoing efforts to improve medical assistance and emergency response training across the country.

This comprehensive deployment plan is expected to transform healthcare delivery in Bayelsa, making it more effective and responsive to community needs. Brisibe reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring that every health intervention has a clear objective aimed at improving healthcare outcomes for its citizens.
