Unlocking Innovation: N10bn TETFund Research Grant Now Open for Applications

The Federal Government has greenlit a substantial N10 billion for the 2026 National Research Fund Grant Cycle through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund). This initiative aims to bolster research across 30 priority thematic areas, spanning Humanities, Social Sciences, Science, Technology, and Innovation.

Following the successful 2025 cycle, which allocated over N6.09 billion to support 174 research projects, TETFund has called for concept notes from Principal Investigators (PIs) eager to contribute to their fields. Only those whose notes pass the initial evaluation will be invited to submit detailed proposals.

Eligibility for this grant is open to lecturers in public tertiary institutions across Nigeria. TETFund encourages multidisciplinary research collaborations, positioning the Principal Investigator as the lead and accountable figure for the research endeavor.

To apply, eligible PIs must navigate the TETFund National Research Fund portal at nrf.tetfund.gov.ng, where they will find guidance for their submissions. It is crucial for applicants to thoroughly review the Research Brief and Application Guidelines prior to submission.

The application window opens on August 31, 2026, with a firm deadline of October 15, 2026. TETFund has emphasized that there will be no extensions for submissions.

The 30 thematic areas cover a wide array of topics, including:

- **Humanities and Social Sciences:** Focus areas include Economic Development, Governance, and Social Welfare.
- **Science, Engineering, Technology, and Innovation:** Key topics include Agriculture, Health, and Renewable Energy.
- **Cross-Cutting Themes:** This includes areas like Clean Energy and National Innovation Systems.

Successful concept notes will undergo evaluation by the National Research Fund Screening and Monitoring Committee. PIs whose proposals are deemed fundable will be invited to defend their work before the committee, with approved projects then submitted to the TETFund Board of Trustees for final funding approval.

For more information, applicants can reach out to the TETFund NRF Secretariat via specified emails. This funding opportunity is a significant step towards advancing research and innovation in Nigeria, fostering growth, and addressing pressing challenges in society.
