Lawal emphasized that such practices are not only unpatriotic but pose serious health risks to the community, potentially leading to epidemics. “I am not happy with the attitude of some residents and landlords who dump refuse and faecal waste into drainage channels,” he stated.
The meeting served as a platform for residents to discuss pressing community issues and to voice their development priorities. Lawal addressed concerns raised by leaders from various sectors, including health, education, and environmental management.
To tackle these sanitation issues, Lawal revealed plans to establish an environmental task force dedicated to curbing violations and addressing environmental nuisances throughout the area.
He urged community development associations to collaborate with his administration in improving infrastructure and essential services. This partnership is crucial for fostering a cleaner and healthier living environment.
Dr. Adeshola Afariogun, Executive Director of AFED, highlighted the importance of citizen participation in governance. He noted that the Town Hall Meeting aimed to strengthen this engagement, allowing residents to directly address their needs with local government officials.
AFED has also trained 49 community leaders on vital topics like environmental justice and governance, equipping them with tools to monitor public services and engage effectively with government institutions.
These tools include community scorecards, budget-tracking frameworks, and advocacy plans, designed to empower citizens in their interactions with local authorities.
Afariogun commended Lawal for his proactive approach to development and expressed AFED's commitment to an appreciative engagement model, promoting constructive dialogue rather than confrontation.
As Ogun State tackles sanitation challenges, the collaboration between the local government and community organizations will be crucial in ensuring a healthier, more sustainable environment for all residents.
