In a statement released in Abuja, the Media Office of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) emphasized the need for transparency and accountability from Tinubu, urging him to address his administration's performance since 2023. They called for a direct dialogue on pressing issues such as the economy and the growing hardships faced by Nigerian families.
Idris Zekeri, spokesman for the Obi Media Office, criticized Tinubu’s approach, stating that true democracy requires presidential candidates to meet voters face-to-face. “No more campaigns by proxy; the Nigerian people deserve to see and hear their candidates,” Zekeri declared.
The statement further condemned Tinubu's absence from the National Peace Accord event, labeling it disrespectful to those working towards peaceful elections. It highlighted the importance of presidential candidates participating in major national forums, including the ongoing Nigerian Bar Association conference.
“This election is not a ceremony to be performed by representatives,” the statement read. “It is a contest for leadership, and those seeking the mandate must be willing to answer questions directly from the electorate.”
Obi’s team argued that a president asking for a second term cannot hide behind ministers and aides. They stressed the need for Tinubu to explain what has changed since 2023 and outline his vision for the future.
“Nigerians must not hear more from political surrogates than from the candidates themselves,” the statement concluded. “If President Tinubu believes in his record, let him stand before the people and defend it.”
As the campaign unfolds, the Obi Media Office remains resolute in advocating for direct engagement, reinforcing the principle that democracy thrives on transparency and accountability.
