Obi, who recently participated in the Nigerian Bar Association's 66th Annual General Conference in Port Harcourt, argued for a phased approach to subsidy removal. He stated that any proceeds from this policy should directly enhance living conditions for Nigerians.
"The savings from subsidy removal should be transparently invested in key sectors," Obi asserted, highlighting agriculture, healthcare, education, and national security as crucial areas for investment. He firmly believes that these sectors could lead to measurable improvements in citizens' lives.
"My goal is not against subsidy removal but ensuring it is executed in a way that protects the populace and fosters economic growth," Obi explained. He warned that higher energy costs without corresponding benefits would only deepen the struggles of Nigerian families.
Obi also linked Nigeria's ongoing economic difficulties to decades of mismanagement and corruption, asserting that the country possesses ample resources to combat poverty and hunger. He pointed to agriculture as a vital sector that can drive economic growth, especially in Northern Nigeria, where land remains underutilized.
"If countries with fewer resources can revitalize their agricultural sectors, Nigeria has the potential to feed itself, create millions of jobs, and even export food globally," Obi noted.
He stressed that Nigeria's development priorities must include food security, healthcare, education, infrastructure, and human capital development. "What we need is competent, honest leadership focused on the common good," he added.
In summary, Obi urged that any reforms resulting from subsidy removal should be geared toward enhancing the lives of ordinary Nigerians, ensuring that the transition is both transparent and beneficial to all.
