The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) KASU chapter, led by Chairman Dr. Abubakar Abdullahi, revealed the alarming trend at a press conference in Kaduna.
Dr. Abdullahi cited poor working conditions and the non-implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU Agreement as primary reasons for the mass resignation.
He emphasized that many of these lecturers have secured positions in newer universities within and outside Kaduna State, exacerbating the crisis at KASU.
The union has issued a two-week ultimatum to both the state government and university authorities to address the agreement's implementation.
Failure to comply, Abdullahi warned, could lead to an indefinite strike, severely disrupting academic activities.
“The 2025 Federal Government-ASUU Agreement took effect in January 2026, providing improved conditions for academic staff,” Abdullahi explained. “However, KASU has yet to commence its implementation.”
The ASUU chairman pointed out that while other federal and state universities have begun to implement the agreement, KASU's staff now rank among the lowest-paid university workers in Nigeria.
He stressed that the delay in implementing the agreement could lead to the accumulation of salary arrears, further demoralizing the academic staff.
The union had previously engaged with university management and stakeholders to resolve these issues but to no avail.
Abdullahi expressed concern over the impact of losing experienced lecturers on teaching, research, and the overall academic development of the university.
He noted that replacing highly skilled academics would require significant time and resources.
The ASUU congress met on August 12 to evaluate the situation and decided to declare an industrial dispute as a result of the ongoing challenges.
This decision aligns with the resolution made by ASUU’s National Executive Council during their recent meeting.
The chairman also highlighted unresolved local issues affecting staff, including excessive workloads, promotion arrears, and inadequate insurance coverage. He urged authorities to take immediate action to address these concerns.
Dr. Abdullahi called on parents and stakeholders to support efforts to avert industrial action, reaffirming the union's commitment to pursuing its demands through lawful means.
He remains hopeful that government and university authorities will act decisively before the ultimatum expires, ensuring peace and stability within KASU.
