Ogun State Shuts Down Quantum Packaging for Illegal Waste Practices

The Ogun State Waste Management Authority has clamped down on Quantum Packaging Nigeria Limited, a paper processing company situated along the Lusada-Igbesa Road in Agbara, for allegedly operating an illegal dumpsite and burning waste.

 The action underscores the state’s commitment to environmental protection amid rising concerns over waste management practices.

In a statement released on Monday, the authority outlined that the closure stemmed from serious violations of local environmental laws, specifically the OGWAMA Law 2020 and the Ogun State Environmental and Public Health Law 2006, both of which outlaw open-air waste burning and unauthorized refuse dumping.

During a recent surveillance operation, officials discovered that the company had transformed its premises into a makeshift dumpsite, where waste was openly burned—a practice that poses significant health risks to nearby residents. 

Mr. Farouk Akintunde, the Special Adviser to the Governor and Managing Director of OGWAMA, stated that the company had received prior warnings about its waste management practices.

Akintunde emphasized that the enforcement action is part of the state government’s broader initiative to tackle environmental violations and promote responsible waste disposal. 

As a regulatory body, we are charged with the management and administration of waste. We cannot allow businesses to operate at the expense of public health and environmental safety,” he asserted.

The authority's surveillance team had been closely monitoring Quantum Packaging after a familiarization visit revealed improper waste disposal practices.

 Following the discovery of a sizable illegal dumpsite adjacent to the factory, the decision to seal the company became imperative.

The Ogun State government remains steadfast in its mission to ensure a business-friendly environment while safeguarding public health. 

Quantum Packaging will remain sealed until it complies with legal requirements, which include shutting down the illegal dumpsite and implementing a remediation plan to eliminate the accumulated waste.

With the enforcement action, Ogun State aims to send a clear message that environmental regulations will be upheld, stressing that companies must adhere to proper waste disposal methods or face severe penalties. 

The state’s commitment to environmental integrity reflects a growing awareness of the detrimental effects of poor waste management practices in Nigeria. 

As local authorities intensify their surveillance activities, businesses are urged to align their operations with established environmental laws to avoid similar repercussions.
