Obi Calls for Peace in Osun Election: A Plea for Credibility and Unity

As the Osun State governorship election approaches, Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has urged all stakeholders to prioritize peace and integrity in the electoral process. 

In a statement posted on X, Obi emphasized the importance of a peaceful, free, and credible election, calling on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to uphold their responsibilities.

Obi reminded the public that “Osun belongs to its people,” urging institutions, political actors, and civil society to act with neutrality and professionalism. 

He highlighted the necessity for voters to feel safe and free from intimidation, asserting that their votes must be transparently counted and faithfully announced.

In his appeal to Osun residents, Obi encouraged them not to let political rivalries divide their communities or lead to violence. “Nigeria is bigger than any candidate,” he declared, reinforcing the idea that the state’s well-being transcends political ambitions.

The former Anambra governor also cautioned external politicians and influencers against inciting violence during the election, insisting they respect the constitutional rights of Osun’s citizens to choose their leaders peacefully.

Obi's message extended to security agencies, urging them to remain loyal to Nigeria and the Constitution rather than aligning with any political party or individual. He emphasized their crucial role in ensuring the safety of every voter.

Addressing INEC, Obi stressed the need for the commission to safeguard the election's credibility from start to finish, tackling irregularities seriously to ensure every legitimate vote counts.

He called on the international community and election observers to monitor the election closely, suggesting their presence would bolster public confidence in the democratic process.

“Democracy is about whether the people are truly allowed to choose,” Obi stated, advocating for a political environment where competition can exist without violence and disagreement can occur without animosity.

In conclusion, he urged all parties involved to ensure that the election serves as a model for peaceful political engagement, saying, “Let Osun demonstrate to Nigeria and the world that we can change power through ballots, not blood.”
