Addressing the 2026 Batch ‘B’ Stream II corps members during their orientation in Jigawa State, he urged them to resist any temptations to engage in partisan politics.
With political activities intensifying following the Independent National Electoral Commission's lift on campaign bans, Olakunle reminded corps members that the NYSC was established to promote national unity. “Your loyalty is to Nigeria, not to any party,” he declared, warning that any involvement in political campaigns or social media posts supporting political figures would result in disciplinary action.
He also highlighted the need for corps members to be security conscious and respect the traditions of their host communities. Olakunle encouraged them to avoid social vices such as cybercrime and drug abuse, stressing that their orientation course is designed to instill discipline and leadership skills.
The DG urged corps members to take advantage of the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) program, stating, “White-collar jobs are no longer available.” He advised them to use their service year to build networks and learn skills for self-reliance post-service.
During an interactive session, corps members raised concerns about their safety and potential redeployment, prompting Olakunle to reassure them that the NYSC prioritizes their protection. He affirmed that no corps member would be posted to crisis-prone areas without security guarantees.
Expressing gratitude for the DG's visit, NYSC Coordinator in Jigawa State, Mr. Muhammad Baba, praised the corps members for their exemplary behavior and readiness to contribute to the state’s development. In a show of commitment, corps member Miss Gift Okoro pledged on behalf of her peers to uphold the values of the NYSC and serve Nigeria diligently.
Olakunle concluded by advising corps members to manage their monthly stipend wisely, encouraging savings and investments for a more secure future.
