Adebutu Criticizes Abiodun Over Delay in Awujale Selection Process

Oladipupo Adebutu, the 2027 governorship candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, has called out Governor Dapo Abiodun for the seven-month delay in selecting a new Awujale of Ijebuland, questioning whether the community will have to wait another 20 years for a new ruler.

During a campaign rally in Ijebu Ode, Adebutu expressed his frustration over the stalled selection process, linking it to the broader issues facing the state under the All Progressives Congress (APC). 

He emphasized that his candidacy aims to liberate residents from what he termed the misrule and hardship imposed by the current administration.

"The people deserve to know why the royal stools remain vacant while those in power seek their votes," Adebutu stated. 

He challenged the governor's administration for allegedly blocking the installation of rightful leaders, including the new Awujale.

Adebutu urged voters to reject the APC in the upcoming elections and support the PDP, promising to bring relief to the people. "We can no longer remain under the shackle of bad governance. 

The fight for liberty and freedom is what drives our involvement in the 2027 elections," he declared.

He cited the recent electoral success of the opposition in Osun State as a sign of hope, encouraging supporters to defend their votes and make them count. "If they come offering money, take it—it's yours. But vote for the PDP, the party committed to genuine development," Adebutu advised.

The rally also served to introduce key PDP candidates, including Wale Ogunbanjo for the Ijebu North East/Odogbolu/Ijebu Ode Federal Constituency and Engr. Femi Omotayo for Ogun East senatorial seat. Both candidates pledged to prioritize good governance and accountability if elected.

The event saw a large turnout of supporters, reflecting growing discontent with the current administration. 

Adebutu's message resonated with the crowd, as he underscored the importance of collective action for change.

Efforts to obtain a response from the state government regarding the delay in the Awujale selection process were unsuccessful. 

The process has been on hold since January 2026, following petitions from security agencies and procedural concerns.

The Awujale stool became vacant in July 2025 after the death of Oba Sikiru Adetona, who ruled for 65 years. 

The leadership of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House has recently appealed to the governor to lift the suspension and allow the kingmakers to complete their constitutional duties.

As the 2027 elections approach, Adebutu's challenge to the governor highlights the political tensions and aspirations for change within Ogun State.
