They protested against alleged midnight raids and intimidations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), urging Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to take action.
The protesters, carrying banners and chanting slogans, submitted a petition to the governor, expressing their concerns about the conduct of EFCC operations in the state.
Nwokoro Julius, a security aide, received the petition and assured the group it would be forwarded to the appropriate authorities.
Co-convener Marvin Mordi emphasized that while they support the EFCC's mandate against financial crimes, they demand that operations are conducted professionally and respectfully.
“It is not a crime to be doing well,” he asserted, highlighting the need for lawful processes.
Mordi alleged that recent raids involved operatives entering homes without proper identification, resulting in the arbitrary arrest of youths.
He stressed that the protests aimed to seek government intervention rather than confrontation, advocating for the protection of citizens' rights.
One protester, Emmanuel Ogbolu, identified himself as a victim of these operations. He warned that the current approach by the EFCC could foster unrest among the youth, leading to broader security issues. “Indiscriminate operations can promote youth restiveness,” he cautioned.
The protesters detailed instances of alleged misconduct, including the arrest of individuals without proper profiling and demands for exorbitant sums of money for their release. Mordi called for the government to ensure that such abuses cease immediately.
The movement is calling for a thorough investigation into the alleged unlawful practices, urging the Delta State Government to engage with federal authorities to ensure compliance with constitutional rights during law enforcement operations.
The group insists on accountability, demanding channels for residents to report misconduct safely.
They reiterated their commitment to peaceful protest, emphasizing their desire for cooperation and understanding rather than conflict.
As the EFCC's response to the allegations was not available by the time of reporting, the youths remain resolute in their quest for justice and respect for their fundamental rights.
