Under this new plan, doctors serving in Shendam will receive a monthly allowance of ₦150,000, along with free accommodation throughout their one-year national service. Other medical professionals, including nurses, pharmacists, and medical laboratory scientists, will be compensated with a monthly stipend of ₦70,000.
This announcement was made during a two-day free medical outreach organized in collaboration with the NYSC, part of the Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD). The outreach event successfully provided free medical consultations, laboratory tests, medications, and health education to over 600 residents in need.
Dr. Nshe emphasized that the incentive package is designed to attract and retain qualified healthcare professionals, thereby bridging the manpower gap in the local healthcare sector. "Our goal is to make quality healthcare accessible to all residents, ensuring that no community is deprived of medical services due to staffing shortages," he stated.
The chairman further highlighted his long-standing relationship with the NYSC, dating back to 2003, which has facilitated numerous collaborative efforts. "My hotel has been offered free of charge for NYSC activities for over two decades," he noted, underscoring his commitment to the initiative.
In addition to the outreach, Nshe's administration is undertaking significant improvements to local healthcare infrastructure, including the construction and renovation of primary healthcare centers throughout the local government area, as well as the establishment of a modern medical laboratory to enhance diagnostic capabilities.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang have been acknowledged for their support in enhancing healthcare delivery amidst ongoing economic challenges.
Mr. Jonathan Iliya Yavala, the Plateau State Coordinator of NYSC, remarked on the outreach's success. "We have already attended to more than 400 residents, and we anticipate the total number of beneficiaries to exceed 600 by the end of the program," he stated, noting that the medical team included 11 healthcare professionals who screened and treated various ailments.
His Royal Highness Martins Shaldas III, the Long Gamai of Shendam, expressed gratitude for the timely intervention, highlighting its importance for vulnerable residents unable to afford medical care.
The outreach not only provided free treatment but also raised awareness about critical health issues such as hypertension, diabetes, and preventative care. Beneficiaries praised the initiative as life-saving, with many expressing their appreciation for the services offered by the Shendam Local Government and the NYSC.
As the program continues to unfold, the Shendam Local Government remains committed to enhancing healthcare access and quality for its residents, ensuring that no one is left behind in the quest for better health outcomes.
