INEC Promises Free and Fair Elections in Osun State Ahead of Governorship Poll

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has pledged that the upcoming Osun State governorship election on August 15 will reflect the true will of the people, free from violence. During a courtesy visit to the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji, Amupitan emphasized the importance of a peaceful electoral process.

“The decision of who becomes the governor should be made at the ballot box, not through violence,” he stated, underscoring the election's significance as a precursor to the 2027 general elections. 

Amupitan acknowledged the rising political tensions in the state but reassured residents that INEC is collaborating closely with security agencies to ensure a peaceful voting environment. He mentioned efforts involving the police and military leadership to enhance security during the election period.

“This election is a mirror to the upcoming general elections,” he added, highlighting INEC's commitment to conducting a credible and transparent poll.

In response, Oba Oyetunji thanked Amupitan and his team for their commitment to electoral integrity. He urged the commission to ensure that the election is free, fair, and credible, reflecting the people's choices.

The INEC chairman's visit comes amidst concerns over election-related violence, with local stakeholders calling for proactive measures to maintain peace.

As the countdown to the election continues, both INEC and community leaders are working together to foster an environment where citizens can exercise their right to vote without fear.
