PVCs Stolen in Armed Attack at Osun Distribution Centre

In a disturbing incident, armed assailants disrupted a Permanent Voter Card (PVC) distribution exercise at Oyinlola DC Primary School in Okuku, Osun State, on Sunday. The attack, which occurred during a routine distribution by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), led to the theft of several packs of PVCs.

Eyewitnesses reported that approximately eight hoodlums entered the premises unnoticed before firing shots into the air, causing chaos among prospective voters. A local resident, identified as Gbadebo, described the scene: “We were there to collect our PVCs when they arrived. They shot into the air, and people scattered in different directions. The attackers headed straight for where the INEC officials had placed the PVCs and made off with some packs.”

The Osun State Police Command confirmed the incident, with spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi stating that the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, has condemned the violent act. Ojelabi emphasized that a thorough investigation is underway to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.

According to Ojelabi, “About ten armed thugs reportedly stormed the distribution centre, firing sporadically before stealing three packs of PVCs. The Commissioner has directed the command to ensure that those responsible are identified, arrested, and prosecuted."

The police have deployed tactical and intelligence resources to recover the stolen cards and reassure the public of their safety. Ojelabi urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding, appealing for any eyewitnesses with information to contact local authorities.

This attack raises concerns about security during the ongoing voter registration process in Nigeria, as the nation prepares for the upcoming elections. The incident has drawn attention to issues of voter intimidation and the need for enhanced security measures at polling stations.
