The incident reportedly occurred in Ankyoov, Ikyogbaji Council Ward of Gwer East Local Government Area, and has left residents of the community in shock.
According to community sources, the suspect, who is legally married to the child's alleged father but has no children of her own, had reportedly invited the baby's mother and the infant to live in her matrimonial home.
Residents said the gesture was initially seen as an act of acceptance, and neither family members nor neighbours suspected any foul play.
A source alleged that on the day of the incident, the baby's mother briefly left for a nearby market, leaving the infant in the care of the suspect.
It was during her absence, the source claimed, that the woman allegedly attacked the child with an object, resulting in the infant's death.
The baby's cries reportedly drew the attention of neighbours, who rushed to the scene and apprehended the suspect before she could escape.
The incident sparked outrage in the community, with some youths allegedly attempting to assault the suspect before other residents intervened and insisted that she be handed over to law enforcement authorities.
Police officers from the Aliade Division were subsequently alerted and arrived at the scene, where they took the suspect into custody to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
Efforts to obtain an official response from the Benue State Police Command were unsuccessful, as calls to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, were not answered as of the time of filing this report.
The circumstances surrounding the incident are expected to form part of the ongoing police investigation.
