The incident unfolded in the early hours of Sunday, November 1, 2026, after a concerned resident dialed in a distress call at approximately 1:45 a.m., alerting the Onipanu Division patrol team.
Upon arrival at the scene, the armed robbers opened fire on the police, resulting in an intense gunfight.
One suspect was neutralized during the exchange, while the remaining gang members fled into the night, likely nursing gunshot wounds.
A subsequent search yielded remarkable results: two vehicles—a Nissan Almera and a Toyota Camry—were recovered along with a significant cache of suspected stolen goods.
The inventory included HP and Dell laptops, a PlayStation console, four mobile phones (including a Tecno device), a Samsung television, a standing fan, a rechargeable radio, a Wi-Fi device, clothing, and an OPay ATM card.
Additionally, authorities found three passport photographs, an MTN SIM pack, two National Identification Number (NIN) cards, an unspecified sum of cash, a locally made pistol, two live cartridges, and seven expended cartridges linked to the deceased suspect.
Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, praised the officers for their quick action, courage, and professionalism in handling the situation.
He reiterated the Command's commitment to proactive, intelligence-driven policing and ongoing patrol operations aimed at ensuring public safety.
“We encourage residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities without fear,” CP Ojajuni stated, assuring the community of the police's unwavering dedication to safeguarding lives and property.
In light of the incident, the police have intensified efforts to locate the remaining members of the gang, particularly those believed to be wounded.
Ongoing investigations aim to identify the rightful owners of the recovered vehicles and stolen items while exploring any broader criminal connections.
The Command urges the public to continue collaborating with law enforcement by providing timely and credible information, stressing that community involvement is essential for effective crime prevention and safety.
