NDC Defends Peter Obi’s One-Term Pledge as a Sacrifice for Stability

In a strong rebuttal to former Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha, the National Campaign Council of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has characterized Peter Obi’s commitment to serve only one term as a necessary sacrifice for national stability, not a risky gamble.

The Council's Director-General, Mallam Ibrahim Hussain Abdulkarim, issued a statement on Friday, emphasizing that Obi's pledge aligns with constitutional provisions.

He took issue with Okorocha's assertion that a single term would hinder the Southeast’s strategic alliances for presidential ambitions.

In an interview, Okorocha had labeled Obi's one-term promise as a gamble, arguing that the region cannot afford such risks at this crucial juncture.

However, Abdulkarim pointed out that the 1999 Constitution permits a single term, making it a legitimate option rather than a reckless choice.

“Senator Rochas Okorocha described Peter Obi as ‘a fantastic gentleman’ and ‘clear in his head,’” Abdulkarim stated.

“Yet, we must respectfully disagree with his gambling analogy regarding a single term.”

He explained that Nigeria has already endured the consequences of extended tenures, citing the period from 2015 to 2023 as one marked by rising inflation, a weakened naira, and escalating insecurity.

According to Abdulkarim, these challenges underscore the need for a focused and results-driven leadership approach.

“Peter Obi's offer is a performance bond, not a gamble,” he asserted.

He has promised to be judged strictly by his results during a single term, acknowledging the need for a transition of power to the North in 2031 as part of a broader national strategy.”

Abdulkarim framed Obi’s commitment as a selfless act aimed at fostering stability in Nigeria.

“When a candidate entitled to eight years voluntarily opts for four and invites evaluations based on results, he is not taking a risk; he is making a sacrifice,” he said.

He concluded by stressing that leadership should be evaluated based on impact rather than duration, reinforcing the idea that prolonged tenures have not necessarily yielded positive outcomes for the country.

As the 2027 elections approach, Obi's one-term pledge is poised to become a focal point in Nigeria's political discourse, challenging traditional views on leadership duration and performance.

The NDC’s defense of Obi may influence voter sentiment as the campaign heats up, positioning him as a candidate willing to prioritize results over tenure in a bid to restore national stability.
