Mass Exodus: Over 5,000 APC Members Defect to APM in Adamawa

In a significant political shake-up, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Adamawa State has witnessed the defection of more than 5,000 members to the Allied People’s Movement (APM).

This mass exodus occurred just a day after the APC launched its campaign team, led by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri.

Among the defectors is Abduralman Haske, the APM's governorship candidate, highlighting the growing dissatisfaction within the APC ranks.

. Speaking during a gathering for the defectors, Umar Barkindo, a former chairman of Yola South Local Government Area, articulated their motivations, emphasizing the need for leadership that can deliver tangible benefits to the people of Adamawa.

Barkindo, a respected political figure and former Permanent Secretary, formally announced his resignation from the APC in a letter dated October 26, 2026.

He cited “irreconcilable differences” within the party as a key reason for his departure.

His exit, along with that of other prominent figures, signals a pivotal moment in Adamawa’s political landscape, particularly as the 2027 general elections draw closer.

Barkindo's extensive experience in local governance gives him significant influence among grassroots constituents.

This political shift is not isolated; it follows a series of high-profile departures from the APC, including former deputy governor Martins Babale and other aspirants who have expressed discontent with the party’s direction.

Many of these individuals have criticized the APC for lacking fairness and the ability to win elections under competitive conditions.

In response to the changing political dynamics, the Adamawa APC Campaign Council has been mobilizing efforts to solidify their strategy.

Governor Fintiri has urged campaign committees to submit detailed work plans to ensure a robust approach to the upcoming elections.

The urgency is underscored by recent attacks on the APC campaign team, which have disrupted their activities in key local government areas.

As the party navigates these challenges, the defections to the APM could further complicate their electoral strategy.

With political realignments intensifying, the shift of Barkindo and others from the ruling APC to the APM represents a significant realignment in Adamawa's political sphere.

As the 2027 elections approach, the implications of these defections could reshape the electoral landscape, challenging the APC’s hold on power in the state.
