Director-General Honourable Lekan Fatodu made this commitment during a recent courtesy visit from marathoner and social media influencer Mr. Daniel Somande at the Commission's headquarters. The meeting focused on creating a secure environment for athletes throughout Lagos State.
Fatodu urged motorists, commuters, and the general public to cooperate with road athletes, reaffirming the Commission's dedication to fostering a conducive atmosphere for sports development. "We will not tolerate any group undermining our efforts," he asserted, emphasizing the agency's role in nurturing talent and promoting youth empowerment through sports.
Somande's visit was primarily to inform the Commission about an upcoming 66km race set to take place in Lagos later this year. He also discussed the challenges faced by road athletes, particularly concerning safety and harassment during training.
Since starting his marathon journey in 2020, Somande has logged an impressive 4,500 kilometers, aiming to cover the entirety of Lagos State on foot. He shared his vision for a groundbreaking marathon that could feature runners in traditional Agbada attire, showcasing cultural heritage alongside athletic achievement.
Highlighting the advantages of Ikorodu as a training hub, Somande noted its elevated terrain, which is ideal for distance runners. "Unlike the congested routes in other parts of Lagos, Ikorodu offers the perfect environment for hill training and is comparable to the altitude of Jos, known for producing top marathon runners," he explained.
As he prepares for the Comrades Marathon in South Africa in June 2027, Somande expressed hope for continued support from the Lagos State Sports Commission. His competitive experience includes notable races such as the Millennial Half Race in Ghana and the Access Bank Marathon.
The collaboration between LSSC and law enforcement aims to create a safer training environment, allowing athletes like Somande to focus on their performance without fear of harassment or danger on the roads.
With the Commission’s commitment to athlete safety and development, the future looks promising for road athletes in Lagos as they prepare for upcoming races and competitions.
