Lagos State Empowers Pregnant Women with Mother, Infant and Child Development Programme

The Lagos State Government, through the Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement (OPL&CE), has successfully launched the second edition of the Mother, Infant and Child Development Programme (MICHD) for 2026.

This initiative aims to support vulnerable pregnant women in the state and was held at the Akerele Primary Health Centre in Surulere on October 2.

Dr. Babatunde Omotayo, representing the Special Adviser on Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, emphasized that the MICHD programme is designed to bridge the gap between the government and citizens. It provides vital information on government policies, healthcare services, and available support for mothers and expectant mothers.

Highlighting the need for continuous engagement, Omotayo stated that such programs allow the government to listen to the concerns of residents and ensure they are informed about health interventions.

Dr. Sotunde Oludolapo, Director of Medical Services & Disease Control for Lagos State Health District IV, reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing the health and wellbeing of mothers and children.

She stressed the significance of regular health check-ups, education, and access to appropriate healthcare services.

The speaker accentuated the importance of proper nutrition during pregnancy, noting that the MICHD program provides nutritious food support to promote healthy pregnancies and reduce complications, including anaemia in mothers during childbirth.

Participants were encouraged to register for the Ilera-Eko Lagos State Health Scheme, which offers affordable healthcare and covers emergency procedures, including Caesarean sections.

The programme also provided insights into various Lagos State policies and social interventions available to support mothers, children, and families.

Attendees were educated on Diphtheria—its causes, symptoms, and prevention—and the importance of seeking prompt medical attention.

An interactive question-and-answer session allowed pregnant women to seek clarification on topics such as government services, antenatal registration, and appropriate medications during pregnancy.

Health professionals provided guidance on the importance of regular antenatal care.

A notable highlight of the event was the distribution of nutritional food packs and eggs to the expectant mothers, further supporting their health needs.

Through initiatives like the MICHD programme, the Lagos State Government aims to empower women, ensure healthier pregnancies, and foster the wellbeing of families across the state.
