INEC Kicks Off 100-Day Countdown to 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is set to host a significant World Press Conference and National Stakeholders’ Meeting on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, marking the 100-day countdown to the 2027 General Election.

Taking place in Abuja, this pivotal event will provide updates on essential preparations, including the voters’ register, candidate nominations, logistics, and measures to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.

According to a statement from Adedayo Oketola, Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman, the gathering aims to encourage engagement among key stakeholders in the electoral landscape.

“The Commission will deliver updates on preparations for the elections, emphasizing transparency and proactive communication,” the statement noted.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, will lead the discussions, joined by other crucial figures in the electoral process. This meeting highlights INEC's commitment to engaging various actors involved in the elections.

Expected attendees include political party leaders, security agencies under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES), members of the diplomatic corps, civil society organisations, observer groups, and youth organizations, among others.

As preparations for the 2027 elections intensify, the Commission has outlined a detailed timetable: presidential and National Assembly elections are set for February 20, 2027, while governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will follow on March 6, 2027.

Amupitan, who took office in October 2025, reiterated INEC’s mandate to deliver elections that are free, fair, credible, transparent, and inclusive.

The event will be held at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja, starting at 10 am, with guests required to be seated by that time.

Attendance will be by invitation only, and accredited media representatives must present their invitation cards or badges at security checkpoints.

The meeting will be broadcast live across major national television networks and streamed on INEC’s official social media platforms, ensuring widespread accessibility.

As the countdown begins, this gathering signifies a crucial step toward ensuring a robust electoral process in 2027.
