Atiku Abubakar Vows to Make Life Affordable Again Amidst Nigeria's Economic Struggles

In a bold statement, Atiku Abubakar, the Presidential Candidate of the African Democratic Congress, criticized the current government's management of the petrol subsidy removal, expressing deep concern for Nigerians grappling with soaring transport, food, and energy expenses. “I will make life affordable again,” he declared, pledging a shift in economic policy if elected.

Atiku's comments followed President Tinubu’s Independence Day address, which he felt inadequately addressed the economic hardships faced by ordinary citizens. He took particular issue with Tinubu's defense of the subsidy removal, calling it “addictive,” and challenged claims that salaries and pensions were being paid “on time and in full.”

Drawing attention to Germany's recent decision to cut energy taxes on fuel, Atiku emphasized that rising petrol prices in Nigeria have far-reaching consequences, inflating transportation costs and, in turn, the prices of essential goods. “When petrol becomes more expensive, transport becomes more expensive. The hardship follows Nigerians from the filling station to the market,” he stated.

He argued that the Nigerian government should adopt a similar compassionate approach as Germany, which is providing significant relief to its citizens. Atiku outlined his own plan, proposing targeted support for locally refined petrol rather than a blanket subsidy, aiming to create jobs and lower pump prices.

“Our plan is to restore targeted support for fuel refined in Nigeria, with strict auditing to ensure benefits directly reduce prices,” he asserted. He expressed sympathy for families forced to choose between basic needs, criticizing the current administration for making life “unbearably expensive.”

Atiku's proposed economic reforms aim to alleviate the burden on households by reducing fuel costs, thereby lowering transportation expenses and overall living costs. He stressed that Nigeria's wealth should benefit its people, promoting local production and job creation.

As the controversy over petrol pricing continues to dominate Nigeria's economic discourse, Atiku remains firm in his belief that more direct government intervention is needed to ease citizens' struggles. He concluded, “Lower fuel costs can mean a cheaper bus ride, more affordable goods at the market, and more money left in a family’s pocket."

With the 2027 elections approaching, Atiku's promises resonate with many Nigerians seeking relief from the escalating cost of living. His commitment to change reflects a growing demand for effective governance that prioritizes the well-being of the populace.
