Violence Strikes Plateau Again: Five Miners Killed in Ambush

In a tragic incident on Saturday, five miners lost their lives and two others sustained injuries when gunmen ambushed them at Marit village in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, Plateau State. The attack occurred around 1 p.m., sending shockwaves through the community and raising alarm over safety for local residents and miners.

Rwang Tengwong, spokesman of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), confirmed the attack, expressing profound sorrow over the loss of life. “Five persons were killed, while two others sustained injuries in the attack. It is a very sad and painful development,” he lamented.

Tengwong condemned the violence and called on security agencies to take urgent action to protect communities and prevent further tragedies. Community member Simon Mundat echoed these sentiments, describing the attack as devastating and urging authorities to bolster security measures.

“This is a very painful situation for the community. We appeal to the authorities to strengthen security in the area so that our people can go about their legitimate activities without fear,” Mundat said.

Efforts to reach security operatives for immediate confirmation of the incident were unsuccessful as of press time. Meanwhile, local hunters and security forces successfully repelled another attack by suspected terrorists on the Latok community in Qua’an-Pan Local Government Area on Friday.

According to community member Danat Noel, security operatives responded swiftly to the invasion, engaging the attackers and forcing them to retreat. This incident highlights the ongoing security challenges facing Plateau State, where violence has become increasingly common.

The government faces mounting pressure to address these escalating incidents and enhance protection for vulnerable communities. As residents mourn the loss of their fellow miners, the need for decisive action to restore safety and security has never been more urgent.
