Omo-Agege Insists Supreme Court Ruling Won't Hinder 2027 Senate Bid

Former Deputy President of the Senate, Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege, has asserted that the recent Supreme Court judgment regarding the Electoral Act does not disqualify him from running in the 2027 Delta Central Senatorial election.

In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Strategy and Communications, Mr. Godwin Anaighe, Omo-Agege emphasized that the court's ruling merely restored specific sections of the Electoral Act 2026 concerning party membership and candidate nominations, and did not target him personally.

“The judgment did not issue any order against me or declare me ineligible to contest,” he clarified. Omo-Agege, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, noted that his name was included in the NDC membership register submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) before May 10.

He criticized supporters of his rival, Sen. Ede Dafinone of the All Progressives Congress (APC), for celebrating the ruling as a victory, labeling their claims as political propaganda. “The Court ruled on relevant provisions of the Electoral Act; it did not issue a candidate-specific ruling against Omo-Agege,” he stated.

Omo-Agege urged his opponents to focus on their records and campaign platforms rather than misrepresenting the legal proceedings. “If Dafinone wants the Senate seat, he should come to the field with his record, his program, and his arguments,” he challenged.

He remains committed to his campaign in Delta Central, confident that the electorate will make their choice at the appropriate time. “Political celebrations cannot replace the electoral contest,” he added, reinforcing his determination to contest the seat.

As the 2027 elections approach, Omo-Agege's declaration sets the stage for a competitive race in Delta Central, with both candidates vying for the support of local constituents.
