Tinubu Demands Accountability After Niger Miners' Deaths: Full Investigation Ordered

President Bola Tinubu has called for a comprehensive investigation into the tragic deaths of suspected illegal miners while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State. He has directed that any officials found responsible for these deaths be arrested and prosecuted.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu emphasized that every Nigerian life matters and that no one should suffer neglect or inhumane treatment in government custody. “Where the investigation establishes that any official, through action or negligence, contributed to these deaths, such an officer must be arrested and prosecuted,” he stated.

The President's remarks come in response to alarming reports that 37 suspected illegal miners died while detained following enforcement operations in the Wushishi/Lukoto area on September 15 and 16. Tinubu stressed the importance of accountability and the need for law enforcement to respect the rights of individuals in custody, regardless of their alleged crimes.

He stated, “The fact that these individuals were suspected of illegal mining does not remove their right to life, dignity, and humane treatment.” The investigation will encompass various aspects, including the conditions of arrest, custody, and medical care provided to the detainees.

Tinubu cautioned that the suspension of officials involved should not be seen as an alternative to determining criminal responsibility. “Suspension is only an administrative step and must not substitute for a proper determination of criminal responsibility,” he asserted.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has already suspended the Niger State NSCDC Commandant, Suberu Siyaka Aniviye, and has ordered a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths. The Federal Government has pledged that no one found culpable will be protected from accountability.

Niger State Governor Umar Bago confirmed the deaths and indicated that forensic and medical examinations would be conducted to ascertain the causes. In the wake of the unrest following the tragic events, Bago imposed a 24-hour curfew to maintain order and prevent further violence.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has also called for an independent and transparent investigation into the incident, echoing the demand for accountability. The President appealed for calm among affected families and communities, assuring them that the government is committed to uncovering the truth.

Tinubu concluded, “We must never allow the pursuit of one form of illegality to create another. The sanctity of human life is non-negotiable.” The government's response underscores the urgent need for enhanced oversight and humane treatment within law enforcement agencies.
