Strengthening Maternal Care: Lagos Health District I Partners with Traditional Birth Attendants for Safer Motherhood

In a significant move to enhance maternal and perinatal care, Lagos State Health District I has launched a collaboration between Registered Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) and Alimosho General Hospital. This initiative aims to improve healthcare accessibility at the grassroots level, fostering safer motherhood and stronger communities.

Dr. Sola Pitan, Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Health District I, set the stage for the initiative by emphasizing unity within the health workforce. He stressed the importance of love for the community and the need for collaborative efforts among healthcare providers to drive meaningful change.

With a focus on zero casualties, Dr. Pitan highlighted the importance of a seamless referral process. He noted that when a TBA encounters a critical patient, swift referrals to appropriate health facilities are vital for timely care.

A pressing concern emerged during a recent training session for TBAs, where it was revealed that some had not referred a patient to a General Hospital in four years. This gap in the referral pathway underscored the necessity for open dialogue and relationship-building between TBAs and hospital management.

Dr. Akinyele Akinlade, Medical Director of Alimosho General Hospital, praised the initiative as a chance for TBAs to understand their professional limits and the importance of seeking assistance. He showcased direct contact numbers for the hospital management team, including the Apex Nurse, Matron Esther Akerele, as a resource for TBAs during referrals.

Akinlade encouraged TBAs to call ahead when referring patients, allowing the hospital to prepare and mobilize specialists based on patient needs. He reassured participants that Alimosho General Hospital is committed to providing quality care for referred patients.

During the engaging Q&A session, TBAs voiced their concerns about challenges in referring patients to General Hospitals, particularly the lack of direct access to medical staff. They called for improved communication and ongoing training to enhance their skills.

Responding to these concerns, Dr. Akinlade acknowledged past challenges but emphasized that positive changes have been implemented. He encouraged ongoing collaboration and assured TBAs that the hospital is dedicated to strengthening the referral process.

The monthly training program focuses on four pillars: safer delivery skills, stronger partnerships, healthier mothers and babies, and improved community health outcomes. This initiative represents a commitment to ensuring safe, timely, and dignified care for women and infants, especially when complications arise.

Through this collaboration, Lagos State Health District I and Alimosho General Hospital aim to empower frontline healthcare providers, ultimately enhancing maternal health in the region and paving the way for healthier futures.
