The incident occurred on August 27 when Obodo, driving a tinted Lexus, allegedly failed to stop for a police patrol team led by Assistant Superintendent of Police Fabian Kpeanabari. The officers pursued him, and during the chase, Corporal Alfred Louis fired at the vehicle, fatally wounding Obodo.
Following the shooting, which took place on Ada George Road in Port Harcourt, protests erupted across the state, particularly among youths from the Ndele Community in Emohua Local Government Area. Demonstrators expressed their outrage over the incident, calling for accountability.
Adepoju confirmed that the dismissed officers would face criminal charges in connection with the shooting. “We will not shield any officer found to have acted outside the law under my watch,” he stated, emphasizing the command's commitment to professionalism and respect for human rights.
After the shooting, Obodo was rushed to Palmer’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The three officers involved were immediately detained for a comprehensive investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department.
In addition to the dismissals, the police are actively searching for Inspector Solomon Nworgu, who allegedly absconded after the incident. The police have intensified efforts to locate him and bring him to justice.
The tragic event has raised serious concerns about police conduct and accountability in Rivers State, prompting calls for reform and stricter oversight of law enforcement practices. As investigations continue, the community awaits justice for Anthony Obodo.
