The State Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Olusegun Olayiwola, emphasized the importance of education during a visit to the area, engaging with rescued students, teachers, and community members. He expressed concern over the ongoing absence of students and called for greater commitment from staff and parents.
Olayiwola highlighted that many children are currently engaged in skills-acquisition activities instead of attending school. He directed relevant officials to follow up with affected learners to facilitate their return to the classroom, aiming to prevent a further increase in out-of-school children in the state.
During his interaction with parents, the commissioner reiterated the need for their support in ensuring that their children resume their education. He acknowledged the challenges faced but stressed that education remains a priority.
The commissioner also sought the support of traditional rulers, including Oba Tajudeen Abisoye of Esiele, to help restore educational activities in the community. The traditional leader reassured Olayiwola of the palace's commitment but raised concerns over military personnel occupying a local health center, impacting medical services.
In addition to addressing the immediate concerns, Olayiwola instructed the Tutor General to facilitate the posting of more teachers, especially in critical subjects like Mathematics, to address shortages in local schools. He also received appeals from the Parent-Teacher Association for greater integration into the Teaching Service Commission.
The Oyo State Government's efforts aim to reassure parents and communities that education will continue to be prioritized despite recent security challenges. The administration is committed to ensuring that every child has access to quality education, reinforcing the message that learning must go on.
